Morning After Pill

The morning after pill is an emergency contraceptive medicine that you can take if you feel your regular contraceptive has let you down, or no contraceptive was used.

If you feel you may need emergency contraception, the morning after pill is a safe, responsible and effective way of preventing pregnancy. It is important to avail of emergency contraception as soon as possible. It is effective up to 120 hours (5 days) but it is more effective the sooner you use it.

The emergency contraception service is available in Phelans pharmacies without a prescription subject to certain criteria.

How will I get the medication at Phelans?

All of our staff are trained to deal with your request discretely, privately and professionally. Our pharmacist will ask you some questions in a private consultation room. This is to ensure that the morning after pill is suitable and safe for you to use. It may not be suitable if:

  • Too much time has passed for the morning after pill to be effective
  • You have certain medical conditions or are taking certain medications
  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients in the medication
  • Your last period was irregular in some way

If for any reason the medication is not suitable, our pharmacist will support and direct you to another source of help.

Where can I avail of the service and how much does it cost?

The emergency contraception service is available in all Phelans stores free of charge for medical card holders. For other customers, a private fee will apply.
