Ease The Itch & Manage Your Eczema

Eczema is very common among both adults and children, and can be frustrating to cope with. Whether you experience it, your child or someone you care for, it is important to understand exactly what Eczema is, to notice the triggers and how to treat it.

What is Eczema?

Eczema is a skin condition that causes the skin to become itchy, dry and cracked when exposed to an irritant that produces inflammation. The skin often becomes red and painful. There are different types of Eczema including atopic dermatitis and contact dermatitis. Eczema is not contagious.

What are the symptoms of Eczema?

The severity of Eczema can differ from person to person. With some people, it can affect large areas of the skin and with others it may appear in small patches. It can cause skin to become itchy and dry. In more severe cases, it can result in red, inflamed and very itchy skin. Continuous itching can make your skin bleed and may cause infection.

As well as the physical symptoms, Eczema can result in disturbed sleep, difficulty concentrating or undertaking your daily tasks and reduced self esteem.

What can trigger Eczema?

Eczema can develop form very dry skin or can be inherited from your parents. There is no test to determine whether you have Eczema or not but your GP should be able to diagnose you by simply looking at your skin.

Triggers can vary from person to person but eczema can be triggered by stress and certain beauty products such as soaps and detergents. Food intolerances and hormonal changes can also cause a flare up.

It is a good idea to make note of what your own triggers are so that you can be prepared for a flare up or so you can avoid certain products or foods going forward.
